Commemorating the Trung Sisters: A Celebration of Heritage and Heroism

On March 15, 2025, our community gathered once again for one of our most cherished annual traditions—the Trung Sisters Commemoration. This event honors the legacy of Hai Bà Trưng, two heroic sisters, Trưng Trắc and Trưng Nhị, who led a rebellion against Chinese rule in 40 AD, fighting fiercely for Vietnam’s independence. Their courage and leadership continue to inspire generations, making this commemoration a cornerstone event for Vietnamese families across the Greater Toronto Area.

The event commenced with a stunning reenactment procession, bringing the Trung Sisters and their female generals and soldiers to life. Volunteers dressed in traditional warrior attire proudly portrayed these fearless heroines, setting the tone for an afternoon filled with pride and remembrance.

Following the procession, the audience stood for the national anthems of Canada and Vietnam, uniting attendees in a shared spirit of cultural appreciation and belonging. Welcoming remarks were delivered by event organizers, followed by inspiring speeches from our distinguished guests, including Michael Kerzner, Ontario Solicitor General; Julie Dzerowicz, Member of Parliament for Davenport; and Mathias de Dovitiis, public school board Trustee for Ward 4 and Executive Assistant to MPP Tom Rakocevic. Each speaker emphasized the importance of preserving and honoring our values—especially those most vital to Canadians: democracy, freedom, inclusivity, and diversity. VWAT Family Services was also awarded a Certificate of Leadership from the government of Ontario.

A solemn ceremony followed, where guests were invited to offer incense at the altar in memory of the Trung Sisters. This symbolic act of respect and remembrance allowed attendees to reflect on the sacrifices made by our ancestors and the strength that defines the Vietnamese community.

This year’s commemoration also featured a special segment dedicated to our youth volunteers, who play an essential role in the success of our events and programs. We proudly recognized our microgrant recipients through the Leader Maker Microgrant Program, an initiative funded by the Government of Canada. This program empowers newcomer and visible minority youth to develop leadership skills and create community-building projects that foster inclusivity and resilience.

Additionally, we honored three outstanding volunteers for their dedication and enthusiasm in supporting our community, ensuring that future generations continue to engage with and celebrate our rich heritage.

A highlight of the event was the heartfelt performance by VWAT staff, featuring their own recording of “Đêm Mê Linh”, a song that pays tribute to the Trung Sisters’ bravery. Accompanied by a mesmerizing sword dance performance, this segment was the result of weeks of meticulous preparation and dedication, demonstrating the unwavering commitment of our community members to keeping our traditions alive.

Adding to the vibrant atmosphere, the audience joined together in a moving sing-along, fostering a deep sense of unity and shared cultural pride. This moment of collective voice and spirit truly encapsulated the essence of the commemoration.

No Vietnamese gathering is complete without a feast! Thanks to the hard work of our staff, each guest received a carefully prepared meal box filled with delicious traditional delicacies, including bánh bao, mì, and a refreshing Vietnamese jelly dessert. The aroma and flavors of these homemade dishes added an extra layer of warmth and nostalgia to the celebration, reminding us all of the comforts of home and the bonds that unite us.
