Summer in the City

The VWAT Summer Camp ran for five weeks in Toronto, providing a valuable experience for kids to learn and have fun. Campers participated in a variety of activities, including arts and crafts and outdoor games, all aimed at encouraging teamwork and creativity. With a dedicated team of camp counselors, we focused on creating a safe environment where campers could enjoy themselves and make new friends. Overall, the summer was a time of learning and growth for everyone involved!

Camp Leader, Clark L.

This summer, I had the chance to be a camp leader for VWAT’s summer camp in Toronto. It was my first time in a leadership role, and I was responsible for making sure all the camp activities ran smoothly. I also kept an eye on the younger campers, making sure everyone was following the rules and staying safe while having fun.

One of my biggest jobs was making sure everyone got to and from events safely. We had field trips to different venues across the city, and I had to make sure all the campers and counselors stayed together. This taught me a lot about responsibility and staying organized, especially when things didn’t go as planned, like when we got stuck in traffic or had to deal with weather issues.

Overall, it was a great experience. I got to practice leadership skills, meet new people, and help younger kids have a great summer. It was really rewarding to see the campers having fun and learning new things, and I’m looking forward to taking on more responsibilities like this in the future.

Special Contribution This Year from Microgrant Recipient, Tien N.

This year, our campers got to enjoy even more fun outings, like trips to the Toronto Zoo and Skyzone, thanks to one of our amazing Microgrant recipients. Tien Nguyen used her grant to add extra excitement to our camp programming, making the summer even more memorable for everyone.

Tien shared that as a child, she always wished she could go on more excursions, so she saw this as a way to give back to the community she’s grown up in. After volunteering at the camp for the past two years, this summer she stepped up in a big way by helping plan fun outings every week.

A big thank you to the Government of Canada and the Canada Service Corps program for generously funding this microgrant!
