Musical Minds Community Outreach is a volunteer organization run by students at the University of Toronto (U of T), St. George Campus. Since our establishment in 2012, our organization has provided free, weekly music lessons to children in Toronto throughout the school year.
Many of our program’s students are recruited through referrals from organizations and community partners across Toronto. We are reaching out to you today as we would love to foster a partnership with your organization! We would greatly appreciate the opportunity to have our program shared with the families of your community and have new students referred to our program by your organization.
Our music lessons take place at 21 Sussex Clubhouse at the University of Toronto, St. George campus (downtown Toronto) from early October to late March. We offer private lessons in piano, guitar, violin, and voice (singing) at zero cost to our students.
When assessing student applications for music lessons, we look for the general criteria listed below. Factors we consider of student applicants include:
· Students are typically 6-13 years old (but any age < 18 years old may be considered)
· Previous experience with music is NOT required (beginners are welcome!)
· Access to an instrument is NOT required
· Our program is intended for families whose household income is below ~$50,000
· Student/family commitment to attending weekly lessons is necessary (we allow for a maximum of 2 planned absences, excluding illness/emergency)
All of our volunteer instructors are University of Toronto students who have received at minimum a Grade 8 Royal Conservatory of Music certificate or equivalent in their musical discipline, and have previous experience in volunteering, teaching, and/or leadership. They are each amply equipped to provide enjoyable and educational one-on-one music lessons and mentorship.
